  5.          Movies: My High School Yearbook

  8.  I didn't finish high school. While my contemporaries drove
  9.  around in their parents' cars, smoking weed and waxing
  10.  mailboxes with baseball bats, I was heading up the hill at
  11.  an ungodly hour to make it to my pre-calc class in my navy
  12.  Honda. Sometimes I'd go to Denny's with them, but mostly
  13.  I hung out by myself and wondered how to fit my square self
  14.  into a round society. At the time I did not mourn the loss of the
  15.  catastrophic shopping trip with my mom to buy a prom dress.
  16.  Nor did I feel left out when my friends donned their blue
  17.  caps and gowns and switched their tassels from one side of
  18.  their drug-smogged heads to the other. Whoopie, I thought,
  19.  with even less enthusiasm than is apparent here. I didn't
  20.  even care that much when I realized I would never be invited
  21.  to a high school reunion to relive the anorexic years and
  22.  be surrounded by the so-called "popular girls", who would
  23.  likely be dejected housewives skulking around the
  24.  auditorium, bellies heavy with pregnancy #2.

  26.  I am in another square phase, so I spend a lot of time with
  27.  media. Computers, TV, video games, books, but mostly movies.
  28.  I have been reliving my high school years vicariously
  29.  through film. I figure, since i don't have any memories of
  30.  my own, why not bask in the ideals of screenwriters?
  31.  So I watched Dazed and Confused, Heathers, Wild Things,
  32.  some nameless Gen X flick about confused little boys unsure
  33.  of What To Be When They Grew Up, some other retro chick
  34.  flick featuring Rosie O'Donnell and Demi Moore called
  35.  Now & Again, and a few late night USA offerings about
  36.  The Ubiquitous Troubled Teen.

  38.  So what did I learn? Well, Dazed and Confused made me
  39.  somewhat nostalgic for the time period right around the year
  40.  of my birth. I got over that pretty quickly when I remembered
  41.  a guy in high school named Tom who was so perpetually
  42.  high that he misspelled his first name when he signed my
  43.  9th grade yearbook. Heathers is always a nice thing to
  44.  eyeball, but my experience of it has become somewhat
  45.  jaded since I discovered that Mr. Slater was jailed for
  46.  beating his girlfriend while under the influence of cocaine.
  47.  The nameless Gen X flick about the boys did nothing but
  48.  reinforce my memories of the little dorks with dicks I
  49.  went to school with. The girls were curling their hair
  50.  and doing their best Madonna imitations, making eyes
  51.  at the boys, who were running around with paper airplanes
  52.  and kicking each other. Worst of all, none of them could
  53.  get through a sentence without squeaking and popping a
  54.  zit without the aid of a mirror. Now & Again was cutesy
  55.  coming of age, so I pretended that I never saw it.
  56.  The late night USA offerings were usually right on.
  57.  Most of them even had vampires or some other creature of
  58.  the night to fuck with. That sounds about how I would
  59.  like to remember high school.
  60.  
  61.  But Wild Things has to take the cake. Sex, scandal, hot
  62.  chicks like Neve Campbell floating around wearing henna
  63.  and black nail polish, crotch shots of police officers
  64.  and high school teens alike. That at least would have
  65.  been fun. It had drugs and booze, too. Best yet, the
  66.  heroine had an IQ of 200, so not only was she cute, but
  67.  she was smart, too. You gotta admire a screenwriter with
  68.  the guts to make a movie like Wild Things. Made me want
  69.  to go back to high school with bigger guts than I had
  70.  then. The downside? Even the music made me horny, so I
  71.  was in a funk for the rest of the day. I must have been
  72.  wishing I was still in high school, where all the guys
  73.  who have earned the right to be called a Guy are hot,
  74.  and the only thing I had to do all day was figure out
  75.  how I could buy smokes and booze without getting
  76.  ID'd.

  78.  Pretty far from pink prom dresses and blue caps and gowns,
  79.  but hey, we all design our own realities.
